The ‘Black 5s' were a mixed-traffic locomotive, a ‘do-anything, go-anywhere’ type, designed by Stanier and introduced in 1934. In their early days, the locomotives were known as the ‘Black Staniers’ because of their black livery, but they were later nicknamed ‘Black 5s'. Known for a truly staggering number of potential modifications, the Black 5 was the workhorse of the LMS and later BR from 1934 -1951.
