They are an aircraft squadron of the United States Air Force, currently based at RAF Lakenheath, England. Part of the 48th Fighter Wing and operates the F-15C Eagle fighter jet as featured in this model kit.
The 493d Fighter Squadron has a long and distinguished history, dating back to World War II, when it was first activated as the 493d Bombardment Squadron in 1943. During the war, the squadron served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, flying missions in support of Allied ground forces in the Philippines, New Guinea, and other locations.
In the post-war years, the squadron was reactivated several times, and served in a variety of roles, including fighter and reconnaissance missions. It was eventually redesignated as the 493d Fighter Squadron in 1991, and has been based at RAF Lakenheath since 1994.
Today, the 493d Fighter Squadron is responsible for providing air superiority and combat support to US and NATO forces in the European theater. Its F-15C Eagle aircraft are capable of engaging enemy aircraft at long ranges and high speeds, and are equipped with a variety of weapons and advanced avionics systems.
