Designed by H.G. Ivatt, the LMS 10000 and 10001 were the first British mainline diesel electric locomotives. The London, Midland and Scottish Railway built them in association with English Electric and the Vulcan Foundry. The LMS placed its order for building the locomotives in May 1947 and work commenced swiftly. Nationalisation was imminent (eight months away) and time was of the essence to complete the engines. The LMS wanted to make history as the first private railway company in Britain to produce a mainline diesel locomotive. Success came with barely three weeks to go.
No.10000 was officially introduced to the press at Derby Works on 8th December 1947 and came into traffic five days later. Its original run was Euston-Watford for the railway company's publicity purposes. Initial trials of No.10000 were on the Midland main line and on the West Coast main line. When No.10001 was completed in July 1948, the two locomotives were soon to be seen working in multiple. One notable journey had the pair working with the 'Royal Scot' over Sharp Fell with a tare of 17 bogie coaches, establishing a haulage record still unmatched today. No.10000 was withdrawn and scrapped in 1963; No.10001 was withdrawn and scrapped in 1968. Neither locomotive survived to preservation.
