Not sure what scale to choose? Here’s how 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32 compare.

If you’re new to scale modelling or just looking to expand your collection, you’ve probably noticed that kits come in different scales, most commonly 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32. But what do these numbers mean, and which scale is right for you? At Chester Model Centre, we stock all three (and more!), so let’s break it down.
Here’s how 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32 compare.
What does “scale” mean?
Scale is simply the ratio between the model and the real-life subject. For example, a 1:72 scale Spitfire is 72 times smaller than the real aircraft. The smaller the number after the colon, the bigger the model.
1:72 Scale – Compact & Collectible
- Size: Small and compact. A typical WWII fighter aircraft will be about 5–6 inches long.
- Best for: Beginners, collectors who want to build lots of kits without taking up too much space, and diorama builders.
- Pros: Affordable, takes less display space, wide variety available.
- Cons: Small details can be fiddly; less room for fine painting work
Perfect if you want a large collection of different aircraft, tanks, or vehicles on your shelves.
1:48 Scale – The Sweet Spot
- Size: Medium. A WWII fighter in this scale will be around 9–10 inches long.
- Best for: Hobbyists who want a balance between detail and space.
- Pros: Great level of detail, still affordable, not too large for most shelves.
- Cons: Can take longer to build than 1:72, larger dioramas need more room.
This is often called the “modeller’s scale” because it strikes the right balance between display presence and manageability.
1:32 Scale – Big & Bold
- Size: Large and impressive. A WWII fighter in this scale might be 15 inches long or more.
- Best for: Experienced builders who want to showcase detailed painting and weathering skills.
- Pros: Huge opportunity for fine detail, amazing display presence, ideal for centrepiece models.
- Cons: Takes up more room, usually more expensive, and requires more build time.
Choose 1:32 if you want a show-stopping model that becomes the highlight of your collection.
