History

The Maunsell designed 59' stock was the first standard design of coaches for the Southern Railway. Following the grouping of 1923, the SR had continued to build coaches to the designs of their predecessors and the aim of the 59' stock was to incorporate the best features of these older designs. The SR believed in making sets of carriages which would stay in a group for long periods of time and they therefore often put set numbers on the brake ends. In total, 1,200 examples were produced, incorporating many coach variations. These lasted in service with BR into the mid-1960s and several have made their way into preservation.
