Great Locomotives Of The LMS by O.S. Nock
Pages: 279
In this third volume of his 'Great Locomotives' series, O.S. Nock once again draws on his vast personal experience and knowledge of British locomotive development to examine the biggest of the Big Four, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Its constituent companies produced many powerful and innovative designs, notably the great rivals the LNW and Midland Railways, and these are described in detail here. But following the Grouping of 1923, the traditional inter-company rivalries died hard, and it was not until W.A. Stanier was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer in 1932 that the golden age of LMS locomotive power dawned, bringing with it the legendary 'Black Fives, 'Princess Royals' and 'Duchesses'. The background stories of the design and development of all the great locomotives of the LMS are told here with the same detail, authority, and humour that characterizes O.S. Nock's previous volumes covering the Southern Railway of the LNER.
